Transition month

The month of November is a month of transition back to winter systems, but unlike the winter to summer transition this one is typified by heavy rainfall totals and unsettled weather. During this month the location of Cayman Islands places us in somewhat of a unique position. At this time of the year, cold fronts from the north are already influencing the islands while the odd tropical system may still affect us from the east. These early season cold fronts may under the right conditions replace the tropical wave in its role of impetus in the development of a hurricane. Hurricanes that form in this manner tend to move away from the islands during their formation leaving the Cayman Islands with lengthy periods of heavy showers and some local flooding. The years in which this phenomenon occurs can easily be seen in the Cayman Islands monthly rainfall totals as such years are typified by higher than normal November rainfall totals.

The month of April is a month of transition from winter systems to summer systems in the Cayman Islands. As the global patterns change for the upcoming summer season, only the very rare late season cold front provides any measurable rainfall. The month is typically the driest of the year
